I've bought guest posts off Fiverr. I've also landed placements on USA Today and Yahoo Business. Both get called the same thing: a guest post.
One did nothing. The other one actually moved the needle.
If you run an accounting, bookkeeping, or CPA firm in the Bay Area and you're trying to decide where to put your marketing budget, that gap is exactly what you need to understand first.
Guest posts and press releases both get lumped into "SEO content." They are not the same tool. Using the wrong one at the wrong time is how firms end up with a stack of links that do nothing for their rankings.
Guest Posts and Press Releases Solve Different Problems
A guest post is built for authority. It sits on a real site, in a niche your clients actually read, and it stays there.
That's what makes the link meaningful to Google and to the person reading it. It's slow to get, because you're working at the pace of an editor, not a content mill.
A press release is built for reach. It gets syndicated across a wide net of news sites fast, often within a day or two.
You trade precision for volume. A press release rarely does the heavy lifting a niche guest post does for rankings, but it's the right tool when you have real news and you want a lot of eyes on it quickly.
Neither one replaces the other. The mistake most firms make is picking one and expecting it to do the other's job.
Why One Guest Post Builds Authority and Another Just Sits There
Here's the part nobody explains clearly. Not all guest posts are built the same way, and the difference isn't subtle once you know what to look for.
Private blog networks sell guest posts the same way to everyone. The same site, the same writer, the same template, dropped into whatever niche paid that week.
Google's systems are built to spot that pattern. A network of sites all publishing the same kind of templated, unrelated content leaves a footprint, and once that footprint is flagged, the links sitting on it stop carrying weight, if they ever did.
Editorial placements work the opposite way. They come from real relationships with real publishers, on sites that already have an audience, a topic focus, and a reputation to protect.
That's slower to build and it costs more, but it's the difference between a link that moves your rankings and one that just exists.
The Guarantee Test
If you're paying for guest posts or link placements, ask for guarantees before you spend a dollar. A real agency should be able to guarantee three things:
- A real domain authority or domain rating floor, not a made-up number
- Niche relevance, so the placement actually sits near your industry
- Actual syndication across multiple legitimate news sites, if that's what you're paying for
If whoever you're talking to can't guarantee those three things, know this from experience: it won't move the needle.
Get the guarantees up front, or don't spend the money. If you want the full checklist for vetting a guest post placement specifically, that's covered in our Guest Post Buyer's Guide.
What My Agency Actually Does
This is what I run for my own clients and for my own agency's site. Ahrefs currently puts our domain rating at 39, up more than 20 points from where it sat just a few years ago.
That climb didn't come from volume. It came from picking editorial placements over private blog networks, every time, and being patient with the ones that took longer to land.
If you want to see how this fits into the bigger backlink picture, we cover that in Backlinks for CPAs: The Bay Area Guide.
So Which One Should You Actually Use
For most Bay Area accounting and bookkeeping firms, the order matters more than the choice.
Get your citations and Google Business Profile dialed in first. That's the foundation everything else sits on.
Then build guest posts on real, niched, high-traffic sites. Then use press releases when you actually have something newsworthy to say, not just to fill a content calendar.
Your Next Step
Before you spend anything on either one, pull a backlink profile on your own site or a local competitor's through Ahrefs or Semrush.
It'll show you exactly where you stand and what your next move should actually be. Or talk to an SEO agency and get it mapped out properly.
Once the right links are in place, that's when you start seeing your firm show up in the news where it actually needs to.
