A New Foundation (and Why I'm Grateful For It)

AI-backed website concept - a San Francisco boardroom overlooking the Golden Gate with SEO, keyword ranking and analytics overlays

[TL;DR] Four and a half years into running J Williams Designs, and I did something two months ago that most people would call a bad business move: I simplified my pricing, and I lost a chunk of work because of it.

Every business hits a point where the thing that got you here won't get you to the next level. Mine was overhead, in time, not just dollars. So I made the call to build something simpler, easier to manage week to week, and yeah, it cost me some clients in the short term.

What it gave me back: time.

Time to finally prioritize some health commitments I'd been putting off for years. Room to actually be present for the clients I do have, from Washington DC to right here in the Bay Area. And a lighter, cleaner setup that's already paying off in ways I didn't expect.

I was scared to make this move. At first it felt like I was walking farther from my goals, not closer to them. But I'm grateful for this upgraded foundation now, scary as it was to build.

So let's talk about it... 👇🏽

Keep your eyes on the road - staying focused on the work that actually moves revenue

📈 Building in Public: New Personal Records with JWD

Since migrating my site from WordPress to an AI-backed website, our impressions and click-throughs on keywords have been climbing steadily; proof the simpler model isn't just lighter, it's working better.

On the client side, our push into the accounting and financial niche is landing smoothly. Geography-terms across San Francisco and Oakland, CA are sitting on page 1 now, for keywords that used to be invisible.

Same playbook as always: link building, consistency, and time. No shortcuts, just compounding efforts.

That same "simpler is better" philosophy is now baked into my offering itself. Our new website product starts at just $250/month, almost half the price of our old one, and covers:

  • Standard Security
  • An AI-backed Site
  • Fast 2-3 meeting build (you bring your logo, branding, and services, then you choose one of two hard-hitting templates built for professional services)

Then, by meeting two your site is built and ready for wiring - straight into your CRM of choice.

We've already built out plug-and-play tools, from integrations, to calculators, chatbots, and more. So you're not stitching together a confusing tech-stack.

Just tell us what you want and how it needs to connect to your business. QuickBooks, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce, and more are already supported, and we'll tell you straight if we're ready to build it or not.

The lighter playbook didn't just save me time. It made my work sharper, easier to deploy, and more valuable to the West-Coast audience I serve. Win-win.

🤸 Our AI Sales Trainer Got a Major Upgrade

Rex AI sales trainer running an objection-handling drill on price anchoring

Quick bit of backstory on why this one matters to me.

When I was building ( & paying for) sales programs, I kept practicing with people around my own skill level. And here's the problem with that: we were reinforcing each other's bad habits. I was picking up "phrases," little language patterns that felt fine on the call; but weren't actually correct when speaking to clients, because nobody in the room was skilled enough to catch it.

What I actually wanted was simple: repetitions with the best.

That way I can learn the real patterns, the real pushbacks, the language that doesn't make you feel icky afterward. Then come back and practice with peers once I'd got the foundation right.

That's the whole idea behind Rex, our AI sales trainer. But building the reward system underneath it was harder than I expected.

For a while, Rex had two major failures: over-rewarding people who were still fumbling toward a better way to say something, and under-rewarding or drifting out of "mode" entirely, which made it nearly impossible to stake out real skill levels inside the system.

I fixed it the same way I'd want someone to help me train: I mapped the specific rewards, the phases required to hit the next level, and exactly when and how those rewards should light up during practice.

That's a bigger deal than it sounds. It's the difference between an AI agent that knows how to help you, and an AI agent that knows how to track your progress and reward you at exactly the right moment. One's a tool. The other's a coach.

Here's what shipped this week:

  • A deterministic reward matrix for roleplay and objection handling
  • Onboarding, fully built out
  • Version 1 of the dashboard is live for individual plans
  • Six gamified-levels to mark real progress, not just participation
  • A live leaderboard, so you can see where you stand
  • Teams dashboard is in internal testing now, live in about two weeks

Tonality is one piece I left out on purpose. It's the last layer because it's the hardest one. There are things you can say that "aren't the right thing to say," and yet the right tonality makes them land anyway. That's not something you bolt on early. That's something you earn your way up to.

Rep with the best. Track the real progress. Then go make it sound human.
